BIOGRAPHY

Joe Henry was born in Marfa, Texas, son of Trine Samaniego.  His birth name was Jose Enrique.  He attended Marfa schools and dropped out following his junior year during the Korean War,  He enlisted in the Marine Corp and served four years.  After his enlistment, he returned to Marfa, worked locally for a year and reentered the Marine Corp in 1957.  He had served 14 years active duty.  He was married to Alice Allison and was the father of a son, Joe Henry Jr.  born in Alpine in 1966.

He had served in Korea and most of the Marine Corp bases stateside.  He had a tour of duty in Japan.  He started his tour in Vietnam in 1967 and was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.  He died of wounds at the Clark Air Base Hospital, Phillipines from complications of multiple gunshot wounds inflicted on March 5, 1967 while on patrol in the vicinity of Da Nang, Vietnam.   

He was buried with full military honors in the Catholic Cemetery in Marfa, Texas.
