BIOGRAPHY

Robert Newman was born in Odessa, Texas, son of Mary Patton and Thomas E. Newman. His parents divorced and he was raised by his mother.  He attended Odessa schools, Austin Elementary, Crockett Junior High School and he graduated from Odessa High School, Class of 1967. He attended Odessa College for a year and enlisted in the Marine Corp in September 1968.

He completed boot camp at the Marine Corp Recruit Training Deport in San Diego, California. He then completed ITR in infantry at Camp Pendleton, California. He started his tour in Vietnam on March 22, 1969. He was assigned as an infantryman for K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, First Marine Division. He was shot to death May 11, 1969 when his company was ambushed. He was one of eight marines in his company to perish in the battle.

PFC Newman was buried at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Odessa with full military honors.  He was survived by his mother, who was employed by Dr. R. L. Wright and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Patton who were employed with the Odessa American.   His mother is now deceased and rests next to him.
